The Stetson lacrosse team dropped a 12-4 contest to visiting Colorado on Thursday evening at the Athletic Training Center. Sophomore Mary Kate O’Sullivan led the Hatters with two goals, while junior Samantha Akl recorded three assists in the defeat.
In their first game of women’s lacrosse ever, the Buffaloes came out energetic and got out on top of the Hatters at the start. Colorado outscored Stetson 6-0 over the course of the first 30 minutes, outshooting the Hatters 14-5.
Stetson fought back in the second half though, scoring four goals while holding the Buffs to just six goals for a second straight period. The two teams alternated scores for the first 25 minutes of the frame, as the Hatters trailed just 10-4 with five minutes to play.
Colorado added two final goals to leave with the 12-4 road victory. Cali Catagnola led the Buffs with four goals, while Johnna Fusco and Katie Macleay added three each in the win. Fusco also totaled three assists for Colorado.
The 12 goals allowed by Stetson was the second best defensive performance in program history. The Hatters gave up just seven scores to Kennesaw State in their first ever victory, a 19-7 triumph last season.
Colorado finished the game with 25 shots to Stetson’s 15, but the ground balls and draw controls were very even. The Buffs led 15-12 in ground balls, and just 10-8 in draw controls. Colorado took advantage of their free positions, finishing 4-of-7. Stetson was unsuccessful on all three free-position shots.
O’Sullivan led the Hats with two goals, the fifth multi-score game of her career. Akl, meanwhile, had a team high three assists, her third time with three or more helpers since the start of last season.
Sophomore Caili Guilday made 10 saves, playing all 60 minutes in goal for the Hatters. She also led Stetson with four ground balls and caused one turnover.
Stetson will continue its five-game home stand on Friday, February 21. The Hatters host Cincinnati at 5:00 p.m. at the Athletic Training Center.
