Hatters Finish Fourth at Gary Freeman Invitational

The Stetson University men’s golf team was unable to make up ground on the leaders during Monday’s second, and final, round of play at the Gary Freeman Invitational, hosted by Bethune-Cookman University.

The event was played at the Halifax Plantation Golf Club in Ormond Beach.

The Hatters entered the final round in fourth place, and finished in the same spot. The host Wildcats were able to hold off the Cadets from the U.S. Military Academy to take the team title. B-CU finished with a 15-over par score of 591, six shots ahead of second place Army.

Savannah State finished third with a 32-over par score of 608 with the Hatters five shots back in fourth.

Bethune-Cookman’s Leon Fricker followed his opening round of 70 with a 75 on Monday to take top individual honors, one shot in front of Savannah State’s Scott Rogers.

Stetson senior Matt Taylor was the top finisher for the Hatters. Taylor shot a one-over par second round score of 73 to finish the tournament tied for fifth at five-over par 149.

Sophomores Dustin Dingus and David Torres both just missed out on top 10 finishes. Dingus posted a second round score of 75 while Torres fired a one-under par 71 in the final round for a two-day total of 151, good to tie for 11th.

Freshman Zach Stark tied for 19th in the field. He followed an opening 80 with a 75 on Monday. Freshman Eliott Azoulay, followed a 79 on Sunday with an 80 in Monday’s final round to tie for 27th.

The final Hatter in the tournament, freshman Dirk Kuehler, finished 30th after a final round score of 81 left him with a score of 160 for the tournament.

The Hatters will be back in action in a one-day event on March 1 at the Forest Hills Collegiate hosted by Georgia Regents University-Augusta. The team will play in the Harmony Golf Preserve Intercollegiate March 2-4 in Harmony, Fla.
