The Stetson women’s tennis team swept Niagara 7-0 to improve to 7-1 on the season Monday at Cummings Courts in DeLand.
“It was fun to play a dual match where my career first started at Stetson,” Stetson Director of Tennis Pierre Pilote said of playing at Cummings. “I have fond memories of my first three seasons of coaching on those courts.”
Stetson didn’t lose a set the entire match, opening with a sweep of doubles play. Senior Diana Bukajeva and freshman Isabella Fernandez won 8-4 at number one, senior MayaBlue Stauffer-MacDowell and sophomore Cari Berry won 8-3 at number two, and senior Lindsey Cable and sophomore Eveline Lepinay won 8-1 at number three.
“The team played an excellent match today, both in singles and doubles,” Pilote said. “Niagara plays an aggressive style of tennis but we were able to handle their pace early on in the match.”
The Hatters continued to excel in singles action as Fernandez opened with a 6-0, 6-0 win at number three to make it 2-0 Stetson. Sophomore Andrea Crespo won 6-1, 6-2 at number two, and Bukajeva won 6-1, 6-1 at number one to clinch the win for Stetson at 4-0.
