DELAND, Fla. – Amanda Grimaldo and Jessica Griffin combined for four RBI as the Stetson University softball team took both games against Marist, Tuesday at Patricia Wilson Field. The Hatters downed the Red Foxes 8-5 in Game 1 and 2-1 in Game 2. Pitchers Meredith Owen and Sarah Read each earned wins in the circle, with Read tossing a complete game and Owen picking up hers in relief.

In the first game, Stetson put a four spot on the board in the Bottom of the first after falling behind 3-0. The Hatters played small ball with an infield hit, a bases loaded walk and two Marist errors to regain the lead after one.

The Red Foxes struck again in the top of the fourth, plating two runs to make it 5-4, but the Hatters tied it up in the bottom of that frame after a pair of hits placed runners on first and third. That’s when a steal by Demi Meza of second allowed Chrissy Morello to swipe home and make it 5-5.

After entering in the fourth, with one out, Owen shut the door on Marist bats, only allowing two hits in the next 3.2 innings, enabling the Stetson offense to come alive in the bottom of the sixth.

Doubles by Jessie TenBroeck and Meza in that inning put Stetson on top for good, but the Hatters were not done scoring, as a two RBI double by Grimaldo made it 8-5, and gave Owen some breathing room in the seventh. The senior hurler sent the Red Foxes home 1-2-3 in the final frame for her ninth win of the season.

In the night cap Read silenced Marist bats effectively, scattering five hits through the first five, staked to a 2-0 lead. The Hatters scored their runs in the second and third, both courtesy of Griffin, who doubled home a run and beat out an infield single for her two RBI.

The Red Foxes did not go quietly though, as they scored a run in the sixth and mounted a rally in the seventh, but Read worked out of trouble, striking out the final batter with the tying run on second, for her seventh win of the season.

Griffin went 2-3 in the second game with her two RBI, while Grimaldo was 1-3 with two RBI and a run scored in the first. TenBroeck (3-4) and Morello (2-4) each had multiple hit games in Stetson’s 8-5 Game 1 win.

The Hatters, (17-5, 3-2) next take on Buffalo in a single game, Wednesday, Mar. 19 at Patricia Wilson Field. Game time is slated for 6 p.m.
