DELAND, Fla. – Jessie TenBroeck and Jessica Griffin each drove in a pair of runs and Stetson survived a seventh-inning rally by Florida Gulf Coast to post its eighth win in a row, 5-4, Saturday night at Patricia Wilson Field.
Meredith Owen (14-3) pitched a complete game as the Hatters improved to 23-5 overall and 7-2 in the Atlantic Sun.
TenBroeck went 2-4 and plated the go ahead run with a two RBI single, while Griffin’s two run double the very next inning made her 2-2, and gave the Hatters the insurance runs they needed for the one run victory.
FGCU jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first off a hit and an error, and held that slim advantage until the third, when Stetson capitalized on an Eagle error with one on and two out. That’s when pitcher Meredith Owen reached first on a miscue by the Florida Gulf Coast shortstop, allowing TenBroeck to cross the plate and tie the contest up at 1-1.
After helping out her own cause, Owen cruised through the FGCU batting order, retiring six straight in the fourth and the fifth and giving the Stetson bats time to put up some crooked numbers on the scoreboard.
The Hatters scored the go ahead run on TenBroeck’s two RBI single in the fourth and then added two more in the fifth off of Griffin’s double to center field to make it 5-1.
Owen went the full seven in the circle and put a last inning Eagle rally to rest, retiring the final batter on a foul fly to first after FGCU scored three in the seventh, to secure her 10th complete game of the season. The senior righty fanned eight batters, walked two and surrendered three earned runs on eight hits.
The Hatters have now won eight games in a row for the second consecutive year as in 2013 they reeled off nine straight from Mar. 1 – 13th against opponents, Niagara, Farleigh Dickinson, Valparaiso and Colgate. Stetson also has a four game conference win streak heading into Sunday’s slate of games. The last time head coach Frank Griffin’s squad won four straight A-Sun contests was April 20-24 of last season, when they took five in a row from North Florida, ETSU and Jacksonville.
SU and FGCU will play Game 1 of a doubleheader at 1 p.m., Sunday at Patricia Wilson Field. Game 2 originally scheduled for Saturday but pushed back a day because of the weather, will start at approximately 3:30 p.m.
Subscription based live video of the Stetson games will be available on HatterVision. Live stats, the Stetson softball twitter feed, and the Hat-Alerts text messaging system will provide in-game updates as well.
