Stetson volleyball head coach Kristina Hernandez announced that four newcomers will join the team for the upcoming 2014 season.
Bailie Burkins (St. Augustine, Fla.), Shelby Connors (Avon, Ind.), Rachel Frankenberger (Virginia Beach, Va.), and Alexis Villa (Honolulu, Hawaii), along with previously announced signee Jessica Armstrong (Jupiter, Fla.) will join the Hatters, who went 18-16 overall last season.
"There is a little bit of everything among this group of athletes," Hernandez said. "We have size, athleticism and skill in a lot of different areas. They are strong competitors who come from winning backgrounds. I am excited to bring in a strong and talent group of student-athletes for next year. They will add a lot of depth and a few will be able to contribute right away for us."
Burkins, a 5-7 libero, was a three-time all-area and two-time all-county selection at Bartram Trail High School. She recorded 192 digs and 18 aces as a senior and helped lead the Bears to a district and region championship in 2012
Connors, a 6-2 middle blocker, helped lead Avon High School to back-to-back Indiana Class 4A State Championships. She tallied 157 kills and 136 blocks as a senior, setting a school record with 120 block assists.
Frankenberger, a 5-6 libero, was a two-time all-district and all-region performer at Kellam High school. She helped lead the Knights to three consecutive Virginia state championships, including an undefeated season in 2011 (34-0).
Villa, a 5-7 right side hitter and setter, will join the Hatters as a junior after two seasons at Laredo Community College in Laredo, Texas. As a sophomore, Villa collected 167 kills, 450 assists, and 276 digs and helped lead the Palominos to a 34-8 record.
Stetson will open the 2014 season at the FAU Invitational on Aug. 29-30 in Boca Raton, Fla. The Hatters full schedule will be released soon.
