Stetson University men’s golf coach Larry Watson has announced the addition of signee Spencer Turner to his program for the coming year.
A native of Amelia Island, Fla., Turner comes from a strong athletics background. His father, Ronald Turner, competed on the track team at the University of Tennessee as an undergrad and the younger Turner played football at Bishop Kenny High before turning his full attention to golf.
“I am excited to have Spencer join the Stetson team,” Watson said. “His athletic background in golf and football will bring a competitive spirit to the team. I really like players who have played other sports because it gives them a better perspective about how their game is progressing.
“I think Spencer’s football experiences will assist him in reaching his potential in golf. I know he could have gone to other schools and played, but he chose Stetson. That is a plus for our program.”
Turner was a two-time All-District selection and helped his team to one district title and two runner-up finishes. He was also active in the Junior ROTC program and was an honor roll student. In addition to his play at the prep level, Turner also competed in 10 AJGA, FCWT and Hurricane tournaments.
He chose Stetson over Tennessee, Chattanooga, Jacksonville, North Florida and Florida Gulf Coast, among others.
Turner will join with Chase Levesque as the only freshmen on the Stetson squad for the 2014-15 season.
