The Stetson men’s tennis team (11-1, 2-0) bounced back from its first loss of the season to defeat Green Bay (9-6) by a score of 4-3 on Wednesday afternoon at the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center.

“What a great match both teams played today,” Stetson Director of Tennis Pierre Pilote said. “We knew that Green Bay had an excellent team and they gave us all we could handle.”

After taking the lead by a score of 3-2, the Hatters’ fate came down to the freshmen once again. Egor Panyushkin ultimately lost in three sets, falling to Leo Gomez Islinger by a score 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (8). The penultimate match ended up the decider, as Cahit Kapukiran rallied from a one set deficit to defeat Craig Cox by a score of 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 and clinch the Stetson win.

Stetson split the other four singles matches on the day. At number five singles, Chester Espie defeated Rowan Isaaks 6-2, 6-0. The Atlantic Sun Conference Player of the Week, freshman Simon Julin, defeated Erik Finkenbrink 6-3, 6-2 to extend his singles winning streak to 11 games in 2013.

In doubles, Stetson won the first two matches to pick up an early 1-0 advantage. At the number two doubles position, senior Didrik Berg and Julin cruised to an 8-1 victory against Michael Tebon and Howard Scott. Sophomore Nathan Debut and Kapukiran clinched the doubles point by defeating Michael Tenzer and Joey Leto by a score of 8-5.

“Our doubles play was at a higher standard today,” Stetson assistant coach Christophe Noblet said after the match. “Playing Drake surely helped us raise our level.”

Stetson will have one day off before heading to Georgia for a pair of conference matches. The Hatters begin by playing Kennesaw State on Friday at 3:00 p.m. and will play Mercer on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.

Match notes: Stetson is 6-0 after winning the doubles point this season … Laurynas Antropikas and Hans Adrian Riseng were leading 6-4 in doubles before the match was stopped … Stetson has not lost consecutive home matches since 2011.
