DELAND, Fla. -- Stetson pounded out a combined 18 runs on 21 hits in a pair of victories Friday night in the first day of the Stetson Classic at Patricia Wilson Field. The Hatters (10-3) hit three home runs in a 8-0 victory over Memphis in the opener, then tallied six extra base hits in a 10-3 win over South Dakota in the nightcap.
Courtney Brandt went 6-for-6 with a home run and five runs scored in the two games combined. Meredith Owen, Brittany Hawn, and Amanda Grimaldo also went deep for Stetson.
Owen (4-2) pitched a one-hit shutout over five innings against Memphis (8-9). She walked only one batter and struck out eight.
In the night cap, Sarah Read improved to 5-0 with a six inning effort, striking out three Coyote batters.
In the Memphis game, Owen and Grimaldo hit back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the first to give Stetson a 3-0 lead. It was Grimaldo's first home run as a Hatter and the first time a pair Stetson batters went deep in consecutive at bats since Chelsea Walley and Brandt accomplished the feat vs. Colgate, Mar. 13, 2013.
Hawn added a two-run home run in the second inning to extend the lead to 5-0. It was her second round-tripper of the season. The Hatters capped the scoring with three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, two of which came across on a double to left field by Chrissy Morello, her eighth and ninth RBI of the season.
In the South Dakota game, Stetson fell behind early, but scored three runs in the top of the third, one each in the fourth and fifth, and five in the sixth to break the game open.
Brandt had a career-high four hits in the game, and hit her first home run of the season in the bottom of the fourth inning. The round tripper was the 15th of her career, making her just the 10th player in program history to reach that mark. Grimaldo doubled, tripled and drove in three runs, while Demi Meza also registered three RBI against South Dakota (8-6).
Stetson will host the same two teams again on Saturday, beginning with a game against South Dakota at 4 p.m., then take on Memphis at 6:30 p.m.
