DELAND, Fla. – The Stetson University women’s tennis team wasted no time in utilizing its tune up with Division III SUNY Oneonta, Wednesday as the Hatters shutout the Red Dragons 7-0, winning in straight sets in each singles match.
The Hatters began the day with three straight doubles victories to claim an early 1-0 lead. Anja Erwin and Alexandra Lyubimova took the first victory (8-0) on court No. 3, and then Brittany Hill and Marta Gonzalez clinched the doubles point for their team with an 8-2 win on court No. 2. The pairing of Cari Berry and Rachel Luke won their set, 8-6 on court No. 1 for the doubles sweep.
To start off singles action Eveline Lepinay won 6-0, 6-0 on court No. 1, while Erwin (court No. 6), Luke (No. 5) and Gonzales (No. 2) also shutout their opponents with 6-0, 6-0 straight set wins. Luke’s triumph made it 4-0 Stetson and clinched the team victory for Stetson, with three matches left to play.
Hill took her match on court No. 3, 6-1, 6-1 and Lyubimova nearly earned a shutout on court No. 4 with a 6-0, 6-1 victory to earn Stetson’s seventh and final team point on the afternoon.
The Hatters (13-5, 3-3) have now won three matches in a row, heading into a tough weekend of conference action. Stetson travels to take on Lipscomb, Friday, Apr. 4 at 1 p.m., followed by an 11 a.m. tilt with Northern Kentucky on Saturday.
