The Stetson University rowing teams hosted the University of Central Florida Golden Knights to a multi-event scrimmage Saturday on Lake Beresford and the St. Johns River in DeLand. The day greeted both teams with perfect conditions, a light breeze, sunny skies, cool temperatures and low humidity.

"It was absolutely perfect conditions for racing," Stetson head coach Mark Wilson said. "We were thrilled to have the Golden Knights up for the day and we look forward to keeping this tradition alive for years to come."

It was the first fall event for the Knights as well as for the Hatter novice teams. While the Stetson varsity squads raced in Jacksonville two weeks ago, the Novice got their first taste of racing and competition on Saturday.

Coaches James Dietz and Wilson were both very happy with all of the races. The Knights finished on top most of the time, which was expected, but Stetson's teams never faltered and kept racing through all the pieces. The racing format was a 3500m head race piece with all the boats racing the river course and then lining up for 3 x 5 minute controlled rating timed sprints.

The five minute pieces showed that UCF has a bit more aggressiveness off the line than the Hatters but in the final piece with the rate caps lifted the Men's Varsity 4 of Andrew Rouse, Jack Ulriksin, David Nutting, Jackson Reddick and coxswain Angelo Parkinson took the rate to a 40 for the final minute and moved from even with UCF's first women's 8 and ended a boat length up.

"It was quite impressive to see the boys work that well at the end of the day of racing," Wilson said. "The women all raced very well, with heads high and with determination which is important for the smaller program when racing a team with much more depth. We were missing two key women from the Varsity 8 which hurts a small program. With more technical training and working hard on and off the water, we will continue to improve and that is what it is all about."

The Hatters will compete at the Head of the Hooch next weekend in Chattanooga, Tenn.
