MACON, Ga. – For the first time this season and the for the fourth time in her career, Stetson University pitcher Meredith Owen has earned Pitcher of the Week honors from the Atlantic Sun Conference. The announcement came down from the conference office this morning, following the senior hurler’s performance in the circle this past weekend at the Stetson Classic in DeLand.

Owen picked up a save and a pair of victories, while fanning 14 batters in three appearances during the tournament. She earned the save by pitching a perfect seventh for the Hatters in their 9-7 win over Memphis on Saturday. The save was her first of the season and sixth of her career, making her the all-time leader in that category in program history.

Owen’s first appearance in the circle during the tournament came on Friday, also vs. Memphis, where she gave up just one hit in a five inning game, striking out eight and walking one. Her second appearance was in relief vs. South Dakota on Saturday, where she pitched four innings, including the eighth. She began the extra frame with a runner on second and no outs due to the international tiebreak rule, but struck out the side, setting the stage for Stetson’s walk-off win in the bottom half of the inning. The senior righty struck out six, walked one and gave up her first earned run of the season on three hits in that contest.

Owen’s accomplishments over the weekend were not just in the circle alone as she hit her fifth home run of the season and scored a run in the opening game vs. Memphis. The Jackson, Miss., native can be found on the conference leader board in a number of different categories, including ERA (0.16, 1st), strikeouts (45, T-5th) and fewest walks allowed (6, T-2nd). She is also sixth in the conference in long balls and fifth in slugging percentage (.744).

Owen joins teammate Jessie TenBroeck as the two Hatters to earn weekly awards from the A-Sun this season. She also garnered pre-season praise as she was a unanimous selection for the all-conference team.

Owen and her Stetson teammates will next take the field for their conference opener vs. USC Upstate, Mar. 11 at Patricia Wilson Field. The Hatters and Spartans will square off in a double header starting at 4 p.m., Tuesday and then conclude the three-game set with a single 4 p.m. game on Wednesday.
