First Pitch
Stetson resumes Atlantic Sun Conference play this weekend when the Hatters visit North Florida for a key three-game series, beginning 6 p.m., Friday.
The Hatters enter the weekend in seventh place in the A-Sun standings, 1.5 games ahead of the eighth-place Ospreys. Stetson is also just one game out of fifth place. Stetson swept its series with Lipscomb last weekend in DeLand, but the Hatters are just 2-14 away from Melching Field this season.
Sophomore Kevin Fagan gets his first start of the season on Friday. Fagan, who has made three very successful relief appearances over the last three weeks, tossed 5.0 shutout innings against Lipscomb last Thursday.
Stetson vs. North Florida
Stetson and North Florida have met 34 times prior to this weekend, and the Hatters lead the all-time series 20-14.
The Hatters and Ospreys first met during the 1988, well before UNF joined the Atlantic Sun Conference. Since UNF joined the A-Sun in 2006, Stetson has won 14 of 24 meetings including two of three in DeLand last season. In fact, Stetson has won eight of the last 10 games between the teams.
Scouting the Hatters
Despite dropping a pair of midweek games at No. 4 Florida State, Stetson enters the weekend playing some its best baseball of the season.
Stetson swept its weekend series with Atlantic Sun Conference leader Lipscomb last weekend, part of a 3-1 week for the Hatters. Stetson out-scored the Bisons, 21-7, and the bullpen tossed 14.0 shutout innings of relief.
SS Tyler Bocock enjoyed an outstanding week, batting .500 (9-18) with three doubles and three RBI in four games. In eight games since being dropped from lead-off to the No. 2 spot in the batting order, Bocock is hitting .467 (14-30).
RHP Taylor Cockrell enjoyed another fine start for the Hatters on Saturday, allowing just three run on seven hits in 7.0 innings. Cockrell allowed a run in the first and two runs in the eighth, but in between faced just 21 batters.
The relief tandem of Kevin Fagan and Tyler Warmoth got the series started off on the right foot for Stetson. Fagan entered the game with one out in the second and proceeded to toss five shutout innings, allowing just one hit. Warmoth relieved Fagan in the seventh and allowed just two hits over 3.2 innings. Stetson won in the 10th on a walk-off single by Garrett Russini.
On Friday freshman Mitchell Jordan tossed 3.1 innings of perfect relief to get the save in the Hatters’ 8-2 victory. And on Sunday Josh Thorne and Trey Norris combined to allow one hit in two innings.
Three Dot Data
