DeLand, Fla. - Stetson University Head Women's Basketball Coach Lynn Bria is proud to announce the addition of Andrea Peterson to her coaching staff for the upcoming 2010-11 season. Peterson, soon to be a double graduate of Drexel University, was the starting point guard on Drexel's 2009 NCAA Tournament squad and has years of experience in youth coaching and academic development.
Peterson spent the 2009-10 school year as a graduate assistant under Dr. Rebecca Weidensaul in the ACHIEVE Center, Drexel's comprehensive learning center for student-athletes, advising student-athletes from DU's 16 varsity sports and coordinating the women's basketball program in community service projects. Peterson also continued the work with children ages 5-12 that she has done for the last seven years as Day Care Director at Today's Child Learning Center in Sharon Hill, Pa.
Peterson began her college basketball career at St. John's, where she earned a Big East Freshman of the Week award in the 2004-05 season, was a member of the SJU student-athlete advisory committee in 2005-06 and earned Big East All-Academic Team honors. The Philadelphia area native transferred home to Drexel for the following season and would eventually help lead the Dragons to the Colonial Athletic Association championship in 2009 and to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history. Peterson averaged 5.8 points, 3.1 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game as a senior in 2008-09 and was named to the CAA All-Tournament Team.
Excelling in the classroom as well as on the basketball court, Peterson's senior year at Drexel saw her earn CAA Student-Athlete of the Year and CAA All-Academic Team honors as well as the Dean Ehlers Leadership Award. She routinely gave her time and energy to community service projects while attending both Drexel and St. John's, supporing the homeless, children with life-threatening ailments and at-risk youth.
Although Stetson will be her first college basketball coaching opportunity, Peterson has been involved with youth basketball in the Philadelphia area for many years as a camp counselor, Blue Star Productions administrator and as the coach of the Philadelphia Belles 15-U girls travel squad.
"I'm so happy Andrea is joining out staff," Coach Bria said. "She brings a ton of energy and will do a great job relating to our players."
Peterson joins fellow first-year staff member Shanele Stires and second-year veteran Mallory Mann on Coach Bria's staff for 2010-11. The Hatters will return four starters and 12 of the 13 players from last year's roster.
