Year-End Athletics Department Awards Announced

DeLand, Fla. - DeLand, Fla. - At the conclusion of each school year Stetson Athletics announces the winners of its "Departmental Awards". Many deserving student-athletes were nominated by the school's coaching staff and administrators. The department's head coaches and members of the senior staff are eligible to vote and determine the winners each year. The 2010-2011 winners were as follows:

Athlete of the Year Award

On the women's side sophomore Alexandria Buelow from the women's golf team earned the Athlete of the Year honor for the second consecutive season. Buelow was voted as the A-Sun Player of the Year for the second season in a row and was named First Team All-Conference. She was on the A-Sun All-Tournament Team after shooting even par and winning the individual title. She finished the season with a stroke average of 73.3.

On the men's side junior Nick Rickles of the baseball team was voted Athlete of the Year. He was First Team All-Conference, Second Team Baseball America Slugger All-American, and Third Team Louisville Slugger All-America. He was a team captain led Hatters to the NCAA Regional and an A-Sun Regular Season Title. At season's end Rickles was drafted in the 14th round of the MLB by Oakland A's... He led the team in Batting, Hits, Slugging, Doubles and Home Runs. Rickles was also Top-13 for Johnny Bench Award and Top-60 for Golden Spikes Award (top player in Division I).

Distinguished Senior Award

This award is presented seniors who in the opinion of the head coaches enjoyed the most distinguished career at Stetson (Academic and athletic performances are considered).

Female: Tessa Gavilsky (Women's Soccer)             

Male: Ryan Corning (Men's Soccer)

Scholar Athletes of the Year Award

Presented annually to student athletes with the greatest academic achievement. (Must be at least a sophomore and carry a 3.2 GPA.)

Female: Andrea Garavaglia (Women's Soccer, 3.93 GPA in Psychology)

Male: Kyle Burton (Cross Country, 3.97 in Biochemistry)

R. Dale Melching Leadership Award

Student/athlete that best exemplifies leadership and success in the classroom and on the playing field.

Female: Maria Harper (Cross Country)

Male: Maksim Levanovich (Men's Tennis)

Wendell N. Jarrard Sr. Award

This award for excellence was established posthumously to honor academically talented student athletes who exemplify academic excellence, athletic competition, leadership and moral values.

Female: Maria Harper (Cross Country)

Male: Maksim Levanovich (Men's Tennis)
