After helping the nationally-ranked Stetson Hatters to a season-opening sweep of George Washington, junior outfielder Mitchel Brennan was named the Atlantic Sun Conference Player of the Week on Monday.

Brennan had just six official at bats in the series against GW, but was on base 11 times over the weekend thanks to drawing six walks and getting hit by a pitch to go with his four hits. Three of his four hits went for extra bases, including a three-run homer in Friday night’s season-opening victory.

For the series, Brennan posted a 1.500 slugging percentage and had an incredible .846 on-base percentage. His OBP was a blistering 2.346 for the series and he drove in five runs.

As a team, the Hatters hit .360 for the series and averaged 13 runs per game.

The weekend sweep helped Stetson edge slightly higher in the Collegiate Baseball poll this week, moving up three spots to No. 23.

Stetson moved up one spot in the Perfect Game Top 50 and now stands at No. 15 in that poll, just one spot behind Miami.

The Hatters also maintained the No. 1 spot in the Mid-Major poll, maintaining an edge of the College of Charleston, Charlotte and Dallas Baptist, who stayed in the 2, 3 and 4 spots.

The Hatters will be back in action on Friday night at Melching Field when they open a four-game series against Central Michigan from the Mid-American Conference. The Chippewas took the final game of their series this weekend at Troy and will visit Stetson with a 1-2 record on the year.

The teams will play a single game on Friday night, with the first pitch slated for 6:30 p.m. DeLand native, and Atlanta Braves star, Chipper Jones will be on hand to throw out the first pitch on Friday. Little League players 12 years of age and under will be allowed on the field for a group photo after the first pitch.

No adults will be allowed on the field. All photos must be taken from the stands.

The Hatters and Chippewas will play a double-header on Saturday with the first game scheduled for a 2 p.m. start. The series finale is scheduled for Sunday afternoon with a 1 p.m. first pitch.
