Jacksonville, Fla. - The Stetson sand volleyball team (7-8) opened the first day of the inaugural Atlantic Sun Conference Championships by splitting two matches at Jacksonville University's Dolphin Beach Volleyball Complex. The Hatters fell 4-1 to North Florida in the morning before bouncing back to defeat FGCU 4-1 in the nightcap. Stetson's #4 seed pair of sophomore Katie DiGirolamo (Bradenton, Fla.) and freshman Stephanie Marin (Naples, Fla.) was victorious against both the Ospreys and the Eagles.
DiGirolamo and Marin were the only Hatter duo to earn a win against the Ospreys as well as the only A-Sun pair to beat any UNF combination today on the shores of the St. John's River. They defeated Paige Pridgeon and Cameron McGuire 21-18, 21-16 in the morning before helping take down FGCU with a 21-16, 21-19 win over Jill Hopper and Whitney Masters. Other winners in the Stetson-FGCU match were Julie Bassett/Kaley Melville, Maren Rygh/Alexa Stonish and Savannah Byl/Kaylee Ream.
Stetson will conclude the team portion of the competition tomorrow, facing host Jacksonville as well as Mercer. After Day 1 of the standings, UNF is the only team at 2-0 with Stetson, FGCU and JU at 1-1 and Mercer sitting 0-2. The A-Sun championships wrap up Sunday with flighted pair bracket play.
