FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Stetson women's soccer team (3-11-1, 1-5-1) dropped a 2-0 match to Florida Gulf Coast (10-3-3, 5-1-1) on Saturday night in Fort Myers.
The Hatters outshot the Eagles by a mark of 4-2 and recorded both of their corner kicks in the second half, but it was enough to overcome FGCU's 2-0 lead after 23 minutes of play.
Shea Rhoney scored both goals for Florida Gulf Coast on the night, striking first in the 15th minute. With assists from Ashley Ciesielczyk and Shannen Wacker, Rhoney tallied her fifth score of the season to give the Eagles the early lead.
"They got us on a good restart," Head Coach Julie Orlowski said of FGCU's first score. "They do a very good job of taking their goal kicks quickly and knocking it wide to their back. That led directly to their first goal."
After a foul in the box awarded FGCU a penalty kick, it was Rhoney who stepped up to the line to take the shot. The Eagle beat junior goalkeeper Victoria Troccoli to the top right corner and gave her team a 2-0 lead it didn't relinquish for the final 65 minutes of play.
Stetson was outshot 12-7 in the game, and recorded only two corner kicks to FGCU's eight. Troccoli finished with four saves in the loss, while the Eagles' Brittany Brown totaled two in the victory.
"It hurts that we didn't take advantage of the opportunities we had tonight," Orlowski said. "But what we're really hurting from right now are the opportunities from past games that we didn't put in the back of the net. It's unfortunate."
The Hatters will next host Mercer and Kennesaw State on the final weekend of regular season play. The Bears come to DeLand for a 7:00 p.m. tilt on Friday, October 19, while the Owls will challenge Stetson on Sunday, October 21 at 1:00 p.m.
