Winners of seven straight games and currently tied for first place in the Atlantic Sun Conference standings, the Stetson women's basketball team will hit the road this weekend to play USC Upstate at 2 p.m. Saturday and ETSU at 7 p.m. Monday.
The Hatters (11-4, 4-0 A-Sun) will enter Saturday's contest owning the 10th-longest active winning streak in the country. However, if Stetson is to keep its hot streak going, the Hatters are going to have to reverse some recent history at Upstate (5-9, 1-2) and ETSU (3-7, 1-2). Stetson is just 1-3 all-time at the G.B. Hodge Center in Spartanburg, S.C., and the Hatters have never defeated the Bucs in six tries at the MSHA Center in Johnson City, Tenn.
The Atlantic Sun leaders in field goal and three-point field goal percentage, Stetson continued to shoot the ball well during its two-game home sweep of UNF and Jacksonville. The Hatters shot 46% against the Ospreys and hit 10 three-pointers, then shot 43% against the Dolphins and knocked down nine three-pointers.
Stetson also played well on the defensive end, holding both teams to under 60 points. However, rebounding continues to be the primary area of focus. In the last game, Jacksonville picked up 20 offensive boards and outrebounded the Hatters 51-36. In 15 games this year, Stetson has outrebounded its opponent only six times.
Saturday's game will feature the top two active points-scorers in the Atlantic Sun. Spartan senior Tee-Ara Copney has scored 1432 points in her four seasons at USC Upstate, while Hatter senior Victoria McGowan has scored 1276 points in her three seasons at Stetson. McGowan currently leads the league with an 18.1 ppg scoring average.
