INDUSTRY HILLS, Cal. – The Stetson University women’s golf team did not get off to the kind of start they had hoped for at the Folino Invitational.
The Hatters posted an opening round team score of 324, which ranked 11th in the 12-team field. Defending tournament champion Gonzaga posted a first round score of 303 to take a five shot lead over second place Boise State (307). Wyoming and Portland State (312) are tied for third place.
The Hatters were led in the opening round by junior Claudia Redinger, who posted a seven-over par 78 to earn a tie for 20th place. Kristen Aiu, who is playing in the tournament as an individual from host Cal State Fullerton, has a one shot lead over five other players. Aiu posted a two-over par 73 in the first round.
Redinger was the only Stetson player to break 80 on the first day of play, which was also the case for more than half the tournament field.
Mallory Viera finished Sunday’s round with a 10-over par score of 81. Jenna Hoecker was one shot back with an 82 while Sammi Smith and Ryan Ashburn both finished with scores of 83.
The Hatters will open play in Monday’s second round starting at 10:47 a.m. EST. Stetson will play with players from Hawaii and New Mexico State in the second round. The tournament will conclude with a third round of competition on Tuesday morning.
