|Stetson, FGCU Put 16-Game Win Streaks on the Line|
Two teams on 16-game winning streaks will meet head-to-head Saturday afternoon as the Stetson Hatters host the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles in an Atlantic Sun Conference showdown at the Edmunds Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m. with live coverage on HatterVision, ASun.TV, and WSBB.
Stetson (19-7, 12-3 A-Sun) carries a 16-game home court winning streak into Saturday's contest, which as of Friday is tied for the fifth-longest active home court winning streak in the nation.
The Eagles (22-5, 15-0 A-Sun), meanwhile, have won 16 straight games overall and are undefeated in A-Sun action this season.
The Hatters begin a stretch of three straight home games to conclude the regular season. Stetson is currently in third-place in the conference, three games back of FGCU and a half-game behind Mercer in the league standings.
"Every game is important, (Saturday's game) is just like every other game in the conference," Stetson head coach Lynn Bria said. "You are trying to win as many games as you can and get the best seed that you can for the tournament. That's what we try to do with all of them.
"It's good too that we are at home, especially for our next three games," Bria added. "I like the fact that we finish up at home."
The Hatters are a perfect 12-0 at home this season, and have not lost at the Edmunds Center since Jan. 21 of last year to FGCU. Stetson has also won 28 of its last 29 home games dating back to 2011.
Senior Victoria McGowan was named A-Sun Player of the Week earlier this week after recording a triple-double (19/12/10) against Lipscomb on Monday. She ranks third in the conference in scoring (16.9 ppg) and has registered double figures in 23 of her 25 games this season.
"Our main focus right now is getting the first or second seed for the conference tournament," McGowan said.
Stetson is looking to even the season series against FGCU. The Eagles defeated the Hatters 74-55 in Fort Myers on Jan. 26 in game where FGCU outrebounded Stetson 43-29.
"I said before we played them the first time that the key is rebounding, and I don't think that has changed," Bria said. "I think whoever can win the rebounding battle has a great chance to win."
McGowan also says rebounding will be a key factor on Saturday.
"We have to communicate well and we have to play tough," McGowan said. "We have to rebound and box out, and keep them off the glass. Rebounding was what killed us the first game, especially (FGCU's) offensive rebounding."
