Stetson University freshman Donald Payne was named Defensive Player of the Week for the Pioneer Football League for the second straight week to start the 2013 season.
Payne shared the honor this weekend with senior linebacker Colin Monnier of Dayton after being credited with a league-best 14 total tackles on Saturday night in the Hatters’ 20-13 loss at Florida Tech. Payne had 10 solo stops, shared credit on a tackle for loss, had four pass breakups and an interception in the end zone to end a Panthers scoring chance.
In two games so far this year, Payne has been credited with a team best 21 total tackles, with 2.5 for losses of 10 yards, including a sack. He had an interception, four other pass breakups and recovered a fumble for a touchdown.
Payne and the Hatters will take this week off before hosting Birmingham-Southern on Saturday, September 21, at Spec Martin Memorial Stadium in DeLand. Kickoff against the Panthers is scheduled for 7 p.m. and less than 1,000 tickets remain available for the game.
