DeLand, FL - The Dunn Deals, led by seniors Austin Perez and Kyle Zech, took the first game of the Hatter Series shutting out the Hatternauts, 2-0, Wednesday at Melching Field.

The Deals did it the way it is supposed to be done, or Dunn, with pitching, defense, timely hitting and smart base running.
Freshman Griffin Fuller got the win throwing three solid innings, striking out two while giving up four hits. He was followed by fellow freshman left-hander Tyler Keller for an inning-and-a-third, junior right-hander Ben Rakus (2/3 IP) and closer junior Trey Norris, who got the save, for the final frame.  In the combined shutout, the Deals punched out four Nauts and gave up a total of six hits while walking three and hitting two.
Sophomore catcher Wade McNabb led the Deals offensively going 2-for-3 with a run scored.  Freshman infielder Colton Lightner and Dean Garabedian had big back-to-back RBI singles in the fourth, leading to the only runs of the game.
Defensively the Deals turned two double plays and threw out two Naut runners at the plate, including a game-ending play at the plate in the seventh.
Despite the Nauts getting the lead-off batter on in four of the seven frames, they just couldn't come up with the big hit when they needed it. The one offensive standout was freshman outfielder/first baseman Eliot Shapleigh who reached base in all three plate appearances, going 2-for-2 and reaching base via hit-by-pitch. Freshman Taylor Cockrell took the loss going 4.0 innings while surrendering six hits, walking two and fanning two.
Game two of the Hatter Series is scheduled for 3 p.m., Friday.
