The Stetson men’s basketball team heads back to the hardwood Monday night when the Hatters travel to Miami to take on Florida International. Stetson and FIU are scheduled to tip-off at 7:00 p.m. with coverage on WSBB AM 1230 and AM 1490.
The Hatters will attempt to earn their first win of the 2013-14 season on Monday night against the Panthers after their comeback effort fell just short at Florida A&M on Thursday. Stetson lost 63-60 to the Rattlers after a one hour and 22 minute delay to wait on officials.
Senior Aaron Graham led Stetson with 14 points in the loss at FAMU, and is the top scorer for the Hatters so far in 2013-14 with 10.3 points per game. Quickly on his way to becoming the all-time three-point leader in Stetson history (nine more), Graham has been solid from beyond the arc in the early going hitting from down town at a 42.9 percent clip (6-for-14).
Florida International will provide another challenge for the Hatters, welcoming Stetson to Miami with a record of 4-2 in the early going. The Panthers took part in the Kennesaw State Tournament to open the season, going 2-2 in four straight days. FIU has since defeated Florida College and Texas Southern at home.
The Panthers have been led by senior Rakeem Buckles – a transfer from Louisville – with 17.2 points per game in the early going. Buckles has added 8.8 rebounds per game through six games, while Tymell Murphy leads FIU with 9.3 boards per game.
FIU leads Stetson in the all-time series by a mark of 12-6, including last season’s 82-79 Panther victory in DeLand. The series dates back to 1990 when FIU won 88-84 in Miami. Last season’s meeting was the first since 1998, and the FIU win was the fifth straight against the Hatters. Stetson hasn’t won in the series since 1996.
Monday night’s game can be heard on WSBB AM 1230, WTJV AM 1490, online at MyAM1230.com, or with the WSBB mobile app for iPhone and Android. The game will also have a live video stream at FIUSports.com.
