A strong weekend in the second and third rounds of the Preseason WNIT landed Stetson University freshman guard Brianti Saunders (Hilliard, Fla.) her first Atlantic Sun Newcomer of the Week award, the league announced on Monday.
Saunders averaged 11.0 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 34.0 minutes per game as Stetson split a pair of games in Nacogdoches, Texas. Saunders tallied 10 points, seven rebounds and two steals in the Hatters' win over Stephen F. Austin. She then picked up her first career double-double with a 12-point, 10-rebound performance vs. North Carolina A&T on Saturday.
For the season Saunders in averaging 10.7 points and a team-high 7.0 rebounds per game. She is the first Hatter to earn the league's Newcomer of the Week honor since Shanasa Sanders was selected four times in 2011-12.
The Hatters (1-2) will play their home opener at 6 p.m. tonight against Indiana State.
