Highlighted by a season-opening match at #24 Florida State, and 10 home matches at the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center, the 2014 Stetson women’s tennis schedule will be a challenging slate, as announced by Director of Tennis Pierre Pilote on Tuesday.
“The women’s non-conference schedule will be challenging this year with the addition of 11 opponents that we didn't play last year,” Pilote said. “It will be exciting for the team to face all those new teams and it will prepare us well for our conference schedule.”
It begins on Sunday, Jan. 19 with a pair of contests in Tallahassee as Stetson takes on #24 Florida State at 9:30 a.m. and then challenges Florida A&M at 2:00 p.m. The Hatters continue the road trip at Georgia Southern on Jan. 25 before returning to DeLand to start the home season in February.
Playing seven out of their next nine contests at home, the Hatters will host South Alabama in the home opener on Saturday, Feb. 1. Home non-conference matches against FIU (Feb. 8), Eastern Michigan (Feb. 25), Oakland (Feb. 27), Niagara (Mar. 3), UNC Greensboro (Mar. 8), and Illinois State (Mar. 11) surround a pair of road tilts at Florida Atlantic (Feb. 21) and College of Charleston (Mar. 1) before Stetson begins Atlantic Sun Conference play.
“We expect to do well within the A-Sun again this year,” Pilote said. “The league keeps on getting stronger in tennis and so does our team.”
The conference campaign begins with three straight road contests at USC Upstate (Mar. 14), ETSU (Mar. 15), and Florida Gulf Coast (Mar. 19). The Hatters return home to host North Florida on Mar. 22 before stepping out of A-Sun action to play at Miami (Ohio) on Mar. 26.
Stetson concludes the month of March with home contests against Mercer (Mar. 28) and Kennesaw State (Mar. 29), before finishing up A-Sun competition on the road at Lipscomb (Apr. 4) and Northern Kentucky (Mar. 5).
A final non-conference contest at in-state rival UCF on Apr. 10 precedes the A-Sun Championship, which is scheduled for Apr. 18-20 in Jacksonville.
