Former Stetson University women's basketball guard Shanasa Sanders has signed a professional contract to play for Friendsfactory BG Donau-Ries in Germany's top tier league, the DBBL.
"I am overwhelmed with joy and excitement," Sanders said. "A childhood dream of mine has finally come true. I want to thank Stetson for seeing my talents and believing in me. Basketball has really been good to me. It has taken me places all over the world. I am forever grateful to coach Bria, the coaching staff, my teammates and my family for all their love and support. My main goal is to compete and perform well in Germany."
Sanders averaged 13.8 points and 6.5 rebounds for the Hatters last season, earning second-team all-conference recognition. In her two-year career at Stetson, Sanders scored 856 points and collected 391 rebounds. She was named A-Sun Newcomer of the Week four times and A-Sun Player of the Week twice.
"I am very happy and extremely proud of Shanasa," Stetson head coach Lynn Bria said. "She is so talented and so versatile. I am sure she will have a great career in professional basketball. It is also great to see another graduate of our program move on to play professionally."
Donau-Ries plays its home games in Nördlingen, Germany, a town about 90 miles northwest of Munich. The DBBL regular season is played through March with postseason games to follow.
Sanders follows in the footsteps of former Hatter Natasha Graboski, who played professionally in Romania in 2011-12.
