ATLANTA, Ga. – The Stetson men’s tennis team opened up the 2014 season on Saturday. The Hatters fell to Georgia Tech on the road by a score of 4-0.
"The overall match score does not reflect the level of play from our players, since we were up in the last three matches that went unfinished," Associate Head Coach Christophe Noblet said.
The Yellowjackets picked up the first point of the match after winning two of the three doubles matches. Sophomore Laurynas Antropikas and Cahit Kapukiran won the lone doubles matchup for the Hatters, topping Cole Fiegel and Anish Sharma, 6-3.
Georgia Tech won the first three singles contests to clinch the match 4-0. Eduardo Segura defeated Kapukiran 6-2, 6-2 at number two singles, Carlos Benito topped Antropikas 6-2, 6-4 at number three, and Fiegel won 6-3, 6-1 against junior Chester Espie at the number five position.
Junior Nathan Debut, sophomore Simon Julin, and senior Hans Adrian Riseng won their first sets at number one, four, and six singles positions before their matches were haulted.
"With only a few days of practice under our belt so far, we like the level of competition the players brought today against an ACC team,” Noblet said. “With school beginning on Monday, the players are looking forward to going back to the regular training regimen."
Stetson continues 2014 action Saturday, Jan. 18 hosting the Second Annual Stetson Men’s Tennis Alumni match. The action begins at 10:00 a.m. at the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center.
