The Stetson lacrosse team was picked to finish third out of six teams in the Atlantic Sun Conference Preseason Coaches’ Poll, while sophomore Amanda Parker was named to the Preseason All-Conference Team, as announced by the league office on Friday.
The Hatters, who finished third during last year’s inaugural regular season, received 25 total points from the coaches in the A-Sun to place just three points behind 2013 A-Sun runner-up Detroit. The Titans’ 28 points put them eight behind defending champion Jacksonville, which totaled 36 points and all six first place nods.
Kennesaw State was fourth in the poll with 14 points, newcomer to the league Elon was fifth with 13 points, and Howard placed sixth with 10 total points.
Parker was one of 12 student-athletes named to the Preseason All-Conference Team, she was the lone underclassman in the group, and she became the first Stetson player to earn the honor in the history of the program.
One of three defenders to earn the accolades, Parker tied for the team lead with 28 ground balls in her first season with the Hatters. She was also second on the squad with 16 caused turnovers and picked up four draw controls in 15 games as a freshman.
The A-Sun also named 12 student-athletes to the Newcomer Watch List, including Stetson’s Erin Busch and Lindsay Summers. Busch is a defender from Annapolis, Md., while Summers is a midfielder from Fallston, Md.
The Hatter fans also came out in support of the Stetson squad as sophomores Maylis Broderick and Caili Guilday were named Fan-Voted Preseason Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year, respectively. Broderick and Guilday received the most votes from the public in their respective categories on the league’s Facebook page.
Stetson opens up the 2014 season on Friday, Jan. 24. The Hatters play Syracuse at Disney’s Wide World of Sport Complex at 7:00 p.m.
