For the third consecutive week and for a conference-record fifth time this season, Stetson University freshman Amber Porter (Woodbridge, Va.) was selected as the Atlantic Sun Newcomer of the Week, the league announced on Monday.
Porter averaged 17.0 points, 10.5 rebounds, 2.0 blocks last week to help lead the Hatters to a pair of road victories and a tie for first place in the conference standings.
On Thursday, Porter scored 17 points (5-for-7 on field goal attempts) and pulled down nine rebounds in Stetson's 90-66 win at Northern Kentucky. On Saturday, she led all scorers with 17 points, while adding 12 rebounds and three blocks in Stetson's 82-47 win at Lipscomb. It was her sixth double-double of the season.
A 6-3 post player, Porter has scored in double figures in eight straight games and now ranks sixth in the A-Sun in scoring (14.0) and fifth in rebounding (8.0). She also leads the A-Sun in field goal pct. (.556) and ranks second in blocked shots with 71, just two shy of breaking the school single-season record.
Winners of eight games in a row, Stetson (16-5, 8-1 A-Sun) will visit USC Upstate at 7 p.m. Thursday night in a game broadcast live on ESPN3.
Note: The Hatters have earned an A-Sun weekly honor a total of 11 times this season (Player of the Week 4, Newcomer of the Week 7).
