The Stetson men’s tennis team will take to the courts of the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center for the first time this season, as they host Georgia Southern, Sunday, Feb. 2, in their 2014 home opener. The Hatters return to DeLand after competing in the ITF Future’s Tournament last weekend in Palm Coast.
“The first home match of the season is always exciting,” said Associate Head Coach Christophe Noblet. “However, it will be important for our players to stay focused on the task at hand, since Georgia Southern is a difficult first match.”
This weekend will be the first time since the Georgia Tech match (Jan. 11), in which the Hatters have competed solely against collegiate competition. In Palm Coast, Noblet’s squad saw some of the best players from the amateur and professional ranks.
“The ITF Futures gave the players an opportunity to apply the necessary adjustments in their games we noticed after the Georgia Tech match,” Noblet explained. “It also gave them a chance to compete at the highest level and measure their progress.”
Sophomore Cahit Kapukiran had the longest run of any Stetson player through the tournament, falling to the No. 1 seed in the final round of competition.
The Hatters (0-1) will host a Georgia Southern (0-2) squad which will be coming to DeLand after taking on UCF in Orlando on Saturday. The Eagles have dropped both matches they’ve played this season, one to Georgia Tech and another to Florida Atlantic.
Match time is slated for 1:00 p.m. on Sunday. Live Stats, the @StetsonTennis Twitter feed, and Hat-Alerts will be available for match updates.
