DELAND, Fla. – Fresh off of its sweep of ETSU over the weekend in Johnson City, the Stetson University softball team will host Bethune-Cookman in a single game, Wednesday night at Patricia Wilson Field. The Hatters have won six in-a-row and eight of their last nine contests, giving them a 6-2 A-Sun mark and a 21-5 record overall.

Stetson outscored the Buccaneers 34-6 during the three-game set and outhit them 42-12, while going 41-91 (.451) at the plate with seven home runs. Setting the pace for head coach Frank Griffin’s squad was junior Courtney Brandt, who had a break-out series hitting .500, with four long-balls, 12 RBI and five runs scored.

Brandt enters the non-conference match-up with the Wildcats, having hit safely in her last nine games as well as hitting at least one home run in her last four times in the starting line-up. Her offensive efforts earned her A-Sun player of the Week honors, while her teammate Meredith Owen was named Pitcher of the Week for the second time this season.

Off to its best start in a decade, the softball team debuted at no. 35 in the first NCAA Softball RPI ranking of 2014, which was released earlier in the week. The 21 wins for Stetson in its first 26 games are its most since 2004, when the Hats went 24-2 en route to a 45-17 record. The 6-2 start to A-Sun play is the team’s best record in conference through its first eight games since 2006, when it got out to a 7-1 start and finished with a 16-4 mark.

The Hatters and Bethune-Cookman will be meeting up for the third time in 2014, with Stetson taking the first two meetings (7-3, 3-1) during the Hatter Invitational, Feb. 15-16. The Wildcats will be making their third separate trip to Patricia Wilson Field, having participated in the Hatter Invitational as well as the Stetson Classic (Mar. 9). BCU has won one game in seven tries on Stetson’s home field this season and carries a 10-21 record into Wednesday’s meeting.

The Hatters break from conference action with Bethune starts at 6 p.m. at Patricia Wilson Field. Tickets start at just $5 and can be purchased online at www.gohatters.com/tix or at the Patricia Wilson Field box office. Stetson students, faculty, and staff are free with a valid ID. Subscription based live video of the Stetson games will be available on HatterVision.  Live stats, the Stetson softball twitter feed, and the Hat-Alerts text messaging system will provide in-game updates as well.
