KENNESAW, Ga.—Travis Bergen hurled 7.1 shutout innings to lead Kennesaw State to a 5-0 win over Stetson in Atlantic Sun Conference play, Saturday at Stillwell Stadium.
Bergen (4-4) needed just 89 pitches to subdue the Hatters (14-22 overall, 3-8 A-Sun). He combined with relievers James Connell and Justin McCalvin as Stetson was shutout for the fourth time this season.
Kennesaw State (18-20, 5-9) wasted no time in getting on the board as Jacob Bruce and Colin Bennett each hit solo home runs in the bottom of the first.
The Owls tacked on another run in the fourth on an RBI single by Brennan Morgan, making it 3-0.
Stetson, which managed just six hits and left eight runners on base, never mounted a serious threat against Bergen until the fifth inning. Kevin Fagan and Mike Fernland led off the inning with consecutive singles, and a Jake Pequignot sacrifice moved the runners over to second and third. But Kyle Zech struck out and Tyler Bocock grounded out to end Stetson’s best scoring opportunity of the game.
While the fifth inning was Stetson’s best chance to score, the Hatters had other opportunities. Stetson put runners on base in six of nine innings, also leaving two runners on in both the first and eighth innings.
The Owls tacked o two more runs in the bottom of the eighth, thanks to a pair of bad-hop infield singles. Trailing 5-0, the Hatters went down in order in the top of the ninth.
Austin Perez (0-6) suffered the loss after allowing three runs on five hits in 4.2 innings.
The Hatters and Owls close out their series at 1 p.m., Sunday.
