Baseball Hosts A-Sun Leader Lipscomb This Weekend

The Hatters host Atlantic Sun Conference leader Lipscomb for a three-game series beginning 6:30 p.m., Thursday at Melching Field. The teams will also play at 6:30 p.m., Friday, and 1 p.m., Saturday.
    Stetson is currently 10th in the Atlantic Sun Conference standings, and the Hatters have lost four straight overall entering the weekend after Tuesday’s 10-3 loss at USF. Stetson is 1.5 games behind USC Upstate for the eighth and final spot for the A-Sun Championships in May.
    The Bisons own a 1.5 games lead on FGCU atop the A-Sun standings, though they have lost two straight following Tuesday’s 2-1 loss to Belmont.

Stetson vs. Lipscomb
Despite only being conference opponents since 2004, Stetson and Lipscomb have a long history on the diamond. The series began in 1965 and continued in a non-conference capacity through the 1984 season.
    Stetson owns a 29-22 record all-time against the Bisons, including a 21-15 mark in DeLand. The Hatters won last season’s three-game series in Nashville (2-1), and have won 10 of the last 12 meetings overall.
    Head coach Pete Dunn is 22-14 all-time against Lipscomb.

Scouting the Hatters
The Hatters went 1-3 last week, including getting swept at Kennesaw State last weekend. Stetson’s offense batted just .244 and the pitching staff posted a 5.18 ERA in the four games. Stetson also dropped a 10-3 decision at USF on Tuesday.
    Last week saw the return of RHP Kurt Schluter. The senior has been out of action since injuring his hamstring on Feb. 23. He made a pair of relief appearances last week and is expected to rejoin the starting rotation this weekend against Lipscomb.
    Infielders Tyler Bocock and Kevin Fagan enjoyed productive weeks at the plate after both had struggled for the better part of two weeks. Bocock batted .417 (5-12) with three RBI in four games while Fagan hit .286 (4-14).
    1B/C Patrick Mazeika continues to pace the Hatters offensively with a .380 batting average, which ranks fourth in the A-Sun. C Garrett Russini is enjoying the best season of his career, hitting .288 with three home runs and 23 RBI. He leads the team with a .482 slugging percentage.
    Sophomore Tyler Warmoth enjoyed a strong week. In three appearances he recorded one save and struck out 10 batters in 7.1 innings. He is currently tied for second in the A-Sun with a career-high seven saves.

With nine home runs as a team Stetson has already surpassed its homer out put form last season (7) ... OF Mike Fernland is enjoying a 9-game hitting streak as the Hatters enter play this weekend. Over the streak Fernland is hitting .286 (10-135) with two home runs and five RBI ... C Garrett Russini has seen steady improvement in his offense in the last 21 games, raising his batting average from .203 to .288 by hitting .375 (27-72) in that span. He also has three homers and 21 RBI in those 21 games ... OF Mike Fernland and DH Josh Powers each connected for their first career home runs in the first game of Stetson’s doubleheader at Northern Kentucky ... both homers came in the seventh inning, the first time the Hatters have hit multiple home runs in the same inning since May13, 2012 at ETSU ... when SS Tyler Bocock and Russini each homered in the first game of Stetson’s doubleheader at ETSU it marked the first time the Hatters had more than one home run in a game since also hitting a pair at ETSU on May 13, 2012, a span of 88 games.
