DeLAND—Jacksonville’s Alex McRae tossed a complete game two-hitter against Stetson as the Hatters dropped the opening game of their Atlantic Sun Conference series with the Dolphins, Saturday at Melching Field.

McRae (4-6) carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning before settling for the two-hit victory. He struck out seven and walked one, throwing 113 pitches against the Hatters (18-27 overall, 7-12 A-Sun).

The Dolphins (15-25, 8-10) struck for a run in the first inning. Angelo Amendolare led off with a single, eventually reached third, and scored on a two-out base hit by Scott Schaub.

JU added to its lead with a pair of runs in the third when Nate Ricci delivered a two-out, two-run single, making it a 3-0 game.

The Dolphins tacked on three more runs in the sixth, thanks in part to a pair of Stetson errors.

With his team leading 6-0, McRae cruised through the sixth inning and was nine outs away from a no-hitter when Patrick Mazeika ended the no-no -- and the shutout -- by leading off the seventh inning with a long solo home run to right field. The homer was the second of the season for the sophomore first baseman.

But McRae quickly settled down and retired the next eight batters before Mazeika ripped a two-out single in the bottom of the ninth.

The Dolphins collected 11 hits on the night. Nine-hole hitter Dylan Dillard had a team-high three hits, and Alex Seifert and Connor Marabell had two apiece.

Sophomore Kevin Fagan (0-2) suffered the loss in his second start of the season for Stetson. The right-hander allowed three runs on five hits in five innings, striking out four and walking two.

The Hatters and Dolphins warp up their series with a 1 p.m., Sunday doubleheader.
