DELAND, Fla. – The Stetson University men’s cross country team has signed Titusville, Fla., native Drew Denson to a national letter of intent, head coach Joseph Matuszczak, announced Monday.
Denson is a soon-to-be graduate of Astronaut High School in Titusville and will bring an impressive running resume to DeLand as a freshman in the fall of 2014. Denson finished third in the 5K during the 2A District 13 Championships last fall, with a time of 16:14.81. He then went on to finish fourth a week later at the 2A Region 4 Championships, crossing the finish line in 16:45 flat.
“We are very excited to have Drew join our program,” said Stetson cross country head coach Joe Matuszczak. “We know he was sought out by great schools all over the country, and that he chose Stetson is such an honor. “
Denson’s personal bests are quite impressive with a 16:03.00 mark in the 5K, a 10:11.20 time in the 3,200 meters and a 4:30.34 performance in the 1,600 meters.
“He has the combo that we are looking for, great talent with even greater dedication,” Matuszcak added. “He will step right into our program and make an immediate impact, so we look forward to a solid four years.”
During his sophomore season, Denson finished second in the Florida High School Athletic Association’s 2A District 12 Championships, with a 5K time of 16:43.18. He followed that up with a 13th place finish (17:28.77) in the Region 3 Championships as a junior before his spectacular senior performance in 2013.
Aside from running the 5K for his school’s cross country team, Denson has also competed in the 1,500 meters as well as the two mile run for Astronaut’s outdoor track and field team. He also has experience running in the 3K as well as the 800 meters and even competed in the long and triple jumps during the spring season.
