Dahlonega, Ga. - Rising sophomore Alexandria Buelow (Palm City, Fla.) and rising junior Lauren Cate (St. Augustine, Fla.) of the Stetson women's golf team finished strong with a two under par aggregate score in the final round of the inaugural NGCA Hooters Women's Collegiate Team Championship on Thursday to take third place overall at 10 under par. Buelow shot three under par 69 while Cate tallied a 73; the Stetson entry was one of just five squads out of 53 to break par in the final round at Achasta by Reynolds Golf Course.
Competing against top players from some of the most successful programs in college women's golf, the Hatters hung around the lead all week and never fell out of the top five at any point. Two-time defending ACC champion Wake Forest (-15) produced the winning entry of Michelle Shin and Cheyenne Woods; the All-American pair came up with birdies on 16 and 17 to claim a two-stroke win over Brooke Pancake and Jennifer Kirby of Alabama (-13).
Buelow and Cate finished a strong third, three strokes behind the Crimson Tide and three strokes better than their playing partners, Brittany Altomare and Elizabeth Brightwell of Virginia. Pairs from such national powers as Florida, Ohio State, Georgia and Duke also carded top 10 finishes behind the Hatters.
The two Stetson golfers will return to campus later this month along with their teammates as the Hatters begin the quest for a third consecutive Atlantic Sun Conference title and return trip to the NCAA East Regional. The 2010-11 season begins September 26 at the UNC Greensboro Starmount Classic.
