DeLand, Fla. - College Baseball Insider.com has named the Stetson baseball team as its first Team of the Week for 2011. The Hatters opened the season with a 3-game sweep of the University of Georgia Bulldogs in DeLand.
Stetson opened on Friday night with a 6-3 win to give the team a boost. Lindsey Caughel struck out six batters over five innings, Austin Perez picked up the win, and Robbie Powell secured his first save of the season. Jeff Simpson was an impressive 4-for-4 with 3 RBI at the plate.
Saturday afternoon the Hatters 5-0 lead and never looked back on its way to a 7-2 win. Will Dorsey pitched well over six innings allowing just one run and picking up his first victory.
Sunday's 8-4 victory featured a 4-run 6th inning and outstanding pitching by starter Kurt Schluter and the bullpen. The staff as a whole allowed just one earned run. Jake Boyd picked up a save by tossing the final scoreless inning and a third.
In total for the weekend the Stetson pitching staff allowed just six earned runs over 27 innings and struck out 17 batters while walking just six.
It was the first time the Hatters have opened the season at 3-0 since 2002 when they won their first eight games. Stetson (3-0) avenged its three losses to Georgia last season in Athens and is now 6-8 all-time against the Bulldogs.
"We had three quality starts this weekend. That's huge and our bullpen did an awfully good job also. We pitched out of jams. They had some chances to put together some big innings and we pitched our way out of them. We are very pleased. It was a team effort and we made some big plays when we needed them", said Stetson head coach Pete Dunn. "We are happy to have been named the CBI Team of the Week."
The Hatters travel to Bethune-Cookman for a 6:00 p.m. game tonight, and then return to DeLand to host the University of Maine in a four-game series beginning Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m.
