DeLand, Fla. - Stetson sophomore Carolina de los Santos (Montevideo, Uruguay) has been named Atlantic Sun Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week for March 16, the league office announced Wednesday. This is the first career weekly award for the 2010 A-Sun Freshman of the Year.
Playing #1 singles and #1 doubles, de los Santos paced the Hatters (12-1) to a 3-0 trip through the Peach State over the weekend, beating Georgia Southern as well as A-Sun rivals Mercer and Kennesaw State. She won all three of her #1 singles matches in straight sets, dropping just seven total games in the process and cruising to identical 6-0, 6-1 wins over the top players from Mercer (Jennifer Lada) and Kennesaw State (Vera Shkundina).
In doubles, de los Santos and her senior partner Unnati Purushotham (Hyderabad, India), the A-Sun Preseason Doubles Team of the Year, went 3-0 at the top of the lineup with a 24-7 overall games mark. For the year she is 10-2 in singles and 11-1 in doubles.
De los Santos and Purushotham have each won one A-Sun Player of the Week award this season. The Hatters host Chattanooga at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Mandy Stoll Tennis Center; Live Scoring is available at GoHatters.com.
