DeLand, Fla. - The Stetson women's tennis team (3-1, 1-0 Atlantic Sun) opened its conference schedule in fine fashion Saturday afternoon, knocking off visiting Kennesaw State (5-5, 0-2 A-Sun) 4-3 at the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center in extremely windy conditions.
Sophomore Lindsey Cable and senior Shannon Gunning (Boca Raton, Fla.) got the proceedings off to a good start with an 8-0 shutout on doubles court 3; sophomore Diana Bukajeva (Riga, Latvia) and junior Jen Miller (Tampa, Fla.) then brought the doubles point into Stetson's tent with an 8-3 win over Vera Shkundina and Jana Hueckinghaus on Court 2.
Stetson solidified its match win with three consecutive points from the bottom half of the singles lineup. Miller cruised past Kelsey Kennedy 6-1, 6-1 on Court 6, Bukajeva closed out Hueckinghaus 6-0, 6-3 on Court 4 and Cable delivered the clinching point with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Therese Lagerkvist on Court 5. KSU won the three singles matches in the top half, two of which were decided by third-set tiebreakers due to the match result being a foregone conclusion.
"The ladies played an excellent match today in tough conditions," Director of Tennis Pierre Pilote said. "It's unfortunate that Sara (Lazarevic) and Clarke (Tatje) couldn't play their matches to completion as I believe our conditioning program was starting to make a difference in those matches. On the whole, this was an excellent start to our conference schedule."
The Hatters return to action at 1:00 pm Tuesday, hosting Big Ten opponent Michigan State. Live Scoring will be available at GoHatters.com.
