DeLand, Fla. - The Stetson women's tennis team improved to 4-1 on the season and picked up a win over a formidable foe on Tuesday, knocking off visiting Big Ten opponent Michigan State (7-4) by a 5-2 margin at the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center. Three Hatters were double winners on the day: senior Shannon Gunning (Boca Raton, Fla.), junior Sara Lazarevic (Calgary, Alta.) and sophomore Lindsey Cable (Gainesville, Fla.).
Stetson gained an early advantage in doubles when the #3 MSU pair had to retire due to injury, but it took the efforts of Lazarevic and junior Clarke Tatje (Eustis, Fla.) to put away Nicole Herzog and Katarina Lingl 8-6 on Court 1 and give the Hatters the doubles point and the 1-0 lead in the match.
The Hatters kept the pressure on in the singles proceedings, winning four of the six matches in straight sets. Gunning put away Michaela Silesova 6-3, 6-3 on Court 3, sophomore Diana Bukajeva (Riga, Latvia) dropped Lingl 6-4, 6-1 on Court 4 and Cable clinched the fourth point and the match by defeating Julianne Gruber 6-3, 6-4 on Court 5. Stetson made it a 5-2 margin in the win column when Lazarevic won the last match of the day, 6-4, 7-6 over Olga Chernova at the top of the lineup. Marina Bohrer and Dana Guentert earned the two singles points for the Spartans.
"I am so proud of this team," Stetson Associate Head Tennis Coach Chastity Bradley said afterwards. "Our goal was to come out playing aggressive doubles, which the girls accomplished to take the point. They took the momentum into singles and never lost focus the entire day. We played with poise despite the windy conditions and never let Michigan State back into the match."
The Hatters travel to Boca Raton, Fla. later this week for two matches. Stetson meets Xavier in a neutral court affair at 11:00 am Thursday before battling host Florida Atlantic at 2:00 pm Friday.
