DeLand, Fla. - The Stetson women's tennis team (6-1) won its fourth straight match with a 7-0 shutout of visiting Youngstown State (0-8) Wednesday afternoon at the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center.
The Penguins only had four players available for the match, putting the Hatters functionally ahead 2-0 on the scoreboard before play even began with default wins at #5 and #6 singles. Needing only one doubles win to take a third point, junior Jen Miller (Tampa, Fla.) and sophomore Diana Bukajeva (Riga, Latvia) rolled through Lauren Hankle and Gimena Puppo 8-1 on Court 2 to secure the doubles point for the Hatters.
Tatje finished first, defeating Jesko 6-1 6-0 on Court 3. Bukajeva finished her match without dropping a single game, blanking Puppo 6-0 6-0 on Court 4. Lazarevic won her singles match on Court 1, defeating Burak 6-2 6-0. Gunning finished off the match with a straight set victory of her own, taking down Hankle 6-1, 6-4.
"Today was a good day for the women's tennis team," said Stetson Associate Head Coach Chastity Bradley. "Jen and Diana played very strong to clinch the point right away in doubles and we took that momentum into the singles matches. The girls remained focused and on top of their games today throughout the match."
The Hatters are back in action Saturday, March 17 when they host A-Sun rival Mercer at 2:00 pm in the second half of a doubleheader at the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center. The Stetson and Mercer men's squads will match up at 10:00 am; Live Scoring for both matches will be available at GoHatters.com.
