The 2012 season begins on Friday for the Stetson women's soccer team. The squad will travel to Florida International to take on the Panthers at 7:00 p.m., before returning home to host Georgia Southern on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
The Hatters handed FIU a 2-1 defeat to open the season a year ago, rallying from a 1-0 deficit inside the first five minutes of play. It was one of four wins for Stetson against FIU, as the Panthers hold a 12-4-1 advantage over the Hatters in an all-time series that began in SU's first ever season of play (1993).
FIU, which was recently ranked by Top Drawer Soccer as the 52nd best team in the nation, finished last season with an overall record of 13-7-3 and a Sun Belt Conference mark of 8-1-2 en route to a league championship and NCAA Tournament berth. The Panthers return six starters from the 2011 squad.
After squaring off with FIU, Stetson will return home to host Georgia Southern on Sunday. The Hatters have less experience against the Eagles, as the two teams are tied 2-2 in the all-time series with each contest occurring between 1993 and 1995. Georgia Southern recorded a mark of 7-11-2 last year, and a 4-6-1 record in Southern Conference play.
