|Hatters Close Event With Low Round of the Year|
Jekyll Island, Ga. – The Stetson University women’s golf team posted its lowest team round of the year on Monday to close out the Eat A Peach Collegiate at Pine Island Golf Club.
The Hatters posted a 302 on Monday to finish fourth overall in the tournament. The host team from Mercer captured the tournament title, posting a final round score of 300 to edge second place Charleston Southern by four shots. North Florida finished third with the Hatters fourth.
“I think we hit the ball better than we did in the first tournament, and that shows in the scores,” Stetson coach Floyd Kerr said. “The thing we didn’t do is we didn’t capitalize on our birdie opportunities. We hit the ball close, but we didn’t putt the ball well.”
All five members of the Stetson team posted lower scores this weekend than they did in their opening tournament at Myrtle Beach. Junior Sammi Smith made the greatest strides, improving by 18 strokes over her opening performance to finish tied for seventh, her sixth career top 10 finish.
“Everyone contributed and played better,” Kerr said. “The course was fair, but very soft. I think the teams that beat us played awfully good. Our scores are improving. For us to be really competitive, we have to have someone step up every day and shoot a 72 and have everyone else shoot 75 or better.”
Smith closed with a team best two-under par 70 on Monday, breaking her personal best score by two shots. That round tied for the second best round of the tournament. Individual tournament winner Chanya Angwarawong of Seminole State College fired a final round score of 67 to take medalist honors by one shot over Lacey Fears of Mercer.
Behind Smith (77-77-70=224), Stetson’s Claudia Redinger (76-79-76=231) improved by seven shots over the first event of the fall and finished 15th. Ryan Ashburn (74-80-79=233) improved by five strokes and Mallory Viera (78-78-77=233) improved by nine. They tied for 16th place. Jenna Hoecker (84-76-80=240) made a 10-shot improvement and finished 23rd.
“Sammi played good today and Claudia hit the ball well,” Kerr said. “It is a good sign that we are getting better and, hopefully, that will be a trend throughout the year. I think this team wants to prove something this year and will get better as we go.”
Stetson will take almost three weeks off before returning to tournament play October 12-14 in the Xavier Invitational Tournament, which will be played at the Legends Course at LPGA International in Daytona Beach.
“We have some time for the girls to work on some of the things they need to improve on before we go to our next event at the LPGA.”
The Hatters will close the fall season by hosting the Hatter Classic at Victoria Hills Golf Club on November 5-6.
