After spending the last three months on the road recruiting, the Stetson football coaching staff will reassemble on Saturday, joining with the players already on campus, to open spring practice.

The Hatters will hold 15 practice sessions over the next four weeks, culminating on the afternoon of March 1 in the spring Green-White game. All practice sessions will be held at the new Athletics Training Center on the Stetson campus. Weekday practices are scheduled for 7 a.m. while Saturday practices are set for 2 p.m.

The Spring Game is scheduled for a 4:30 p.m. start.

Head coach Roger Hughes will have 88 players at his disposal for the start of spring practice. He said the plan is to pick up right where they left off at the end of fall practice in November.

“We really want to reinforce all of the things we worked on during the fall,” Hughes said. “We want to hit the ground running and have the kind of good practices we saw in the fall and continue to build on the culture of hard work that we established.”

The Hatters opened their first year with 108 players on the roster. While that number has dwindled some, Hughes said the kids who stayed in the program have continued to work hard during the off-season.

“We don’t have any seniors on this team, so these young men are still developing physically,” Hughes said. “I am anxious to see how much bigger and stronger the players have gotten after working in our strength program for the last few months.”

With fewer players on the roster for the spring, depth will be an issue at some positions. Some of the returning players will also be at different positions in the spring, which means they will have some catching up to do.

“We want to see how some of the kids do at new positions and modify those changes if we need to,” Hughes said. “We will focus more on fundamentals and techniques to help everyone get better. We are going to be focused on the details and on effort. We have to understand how fast we are going to need to play in the fall and how hard we need to work.”

The Hatters will begin their first season in 57 years on August 31 when they host Warner University at Spec Martin Stadium.
