The Stetson lacrosse team (0-2) fell to San Diego State (1-1) by a score of 18-1 on Sunday at the Stetson Athletic Training Center. Freshman Paige Levesque scored the lone goal for the Hatters.
The Aztecs scored 14 seconds into the game, as Michaela Jarvis found Lauren Maack for the goal, and San Diego State didn't look back. SDSU rattled off 12 goals in the first half to take a 12-0 lead into halftime.
After four more scores by the Aztecs to open the second half, Stetson put its first shot in the back of the net with 9:06 to play in the game. Levesque scored her first career goal to make it 16-1 in favor of SDSU.
The Aztecs added two more scores before cruising to the 18-1 victory in DeLand. Katie Gill and Jarvis led SDSU with three goals each, while Jarvis and Maack both finished with two assists on the day.
"We came out a little a slow and we gave up a few quick goals," Stetson assistant coach Brittany Dipper said. "I thought in the second half we turned it around. Our hustle picked up. We were working together a lot more."
Freshman Amanda Parker led Stetson with three ground balls, while freshman Elisabeth Blackwell added two. Both players also caused two SDSU turnovers in the defeat.
Sophomore Samantha Akl, as well as freshmen Danielle Horgan and Mary Kate O'Sullivan, led the Hatters with two shots, and each put one on target forcing SDSU goalkeepers Sara Tucker and Sammy Slattery to combine for three saves.
Freshmen Whitney Meyers and Caili Guilday totaled seven saves splitting time between the pipes for Stetson. Meyers totaled four stops in just over 40 minutes of action, while Guilday made three saves in 19 and a half minutes.
Stetson will next play on Sunday, Feb. 24. The Hatters will host UC Davis at 1:00 p.m. in the third of seven straight home contests to start the season.
"Moving forward into next week we want to work on getting better on our draws, and working a little more together on the ground balls, going in twos and hunting in packs and just being a little more aggressive," Dipper said.
