Ormand Beach – The Stetson University men’s golf team was unable to hold on to its first round lead on Monday when the team completed play at the Gary Freeman/Bethune-Cookman Invitational.

Florida Atlantic posted a 289 in the second round, which was stopped on Sunday by darkness and completed on Monday morning prior to the final round of play. The Owls followed their tournament low round with a 299 in the final round to defeat the host team from Bethune-Cookman by nine shots.

Stetson posted a 298 in the second round, but slipped to a 305 in the final round to finish with a team score of 906, 12 shots off the lead.

Ryan Fricker of Bethune-Cookman posted the best individual round of the tournament in the second round with a 67 and then held on for a two shot victory over Alex Gates of Florida Atlantic for the individual title.

Stetson freshman Dustin Dingus played consistent golf throughout the tournament and finished in a three-way tie for fifth, a position he shared with fellow freshman Andrew Peterson. Dingus followed his opening round of 74 with a 76 in the second round and another 74 in the third for an eight-over par score of 224.

Peterson got into contention with an even par score of 72 in the second round and also finished the tournament with an eight-over par score of 224. Junior Tyler White was the third Hatter to finish in the top 10, finishing at 11-over par 227 to tie for 10th.

Stetson’s third freshman, Andrew Primavera, finished the tournament tied for 17th at 16-over par 232. Sophomore Matt Taylor finished tied for 22nd, three shots further back at 19-over par 235.

The Hatters will be back in action on March 4-5 at the Charleston Shootout, hosting by the College of Charleston and Charleston Southern, at the Links at Stono Ferry in Charleston, SC.
