After going 1-5 in its first six Atlantic Sun Conference games, the Stetson softball team is seeking a successful turnaround this weekend as the Hatters host the Northern Kentucky Norse for a three-game conference series Friday and Saturday at Patricia Wilson Field.
It will be the first-ever meeting between the Hatters and Norse, who are playing just their first season in the Atlantic Sun and on the Division I level. The teams will play a doubleheader Friday at 1 p.m. and a single-game Saturday at noon. All three games can be seen for free on HatterVision and ASun.TV. Jeff Sharon will call the action.
Stetson (18-12, 1-5 A-Sun) is looking to bounce back after going 1-2 last weekend against Mercer. In a series that featured a combined 40 runs, the Hatters started strong, outscoring the Bears 12-4 in the first eight innings of the series. The Bears, however, responded late, outscoring Stetson 20-4 over the final 11 innings to take the conference set.
The Hatters enter the weekend with a .283 batting average, fifth-highest in the league. Stetson has hit 29 home runs, including 14 home runs in the last 11 games, and the Hatters are averaging 5.2 runs a game.
Runs have been harder to come by for the Norse (6-21, 0-9 A-Sun), who are hitting a league-low .212 and averaging 3.0 runs per game. Northern Kentucky will welcome the warm Florida weather after playing a majority of their games in cooler temperatures. In fact, two weeks ago the Norse and Bears played their A-Sun series finale in the midst of snow flurries in Highland Heights, Ky.
Chrissy Morello leads the Hatters with 32 hits, Demi Meza has hit a team-high eight home runs, and Chelsea Whalley tops the squad with 26 runs batted in. Meredith Owen leads the pitchers with a 12-4 record, a 1.88 ERA and three saves.
