Six Stetson University sand volleyball student-athletes earned postseason honors from the Atlantic Sun Conference, the league announced on Thursday.
Kaley Melville (New Germany, Minn.) and Julie Bassett (Wadsworth, Ohio) joined teammates Alisha Hoffman (Leesburg, Fla.) and Catherine Coston (Pierson, Fla.) on the All-Atlantic Sun First Team, Kendale Speyerer (Winter Haven, Fla.) was selected to the All-Atlantic Sun Freshman Team, and Katie DiGirolamo (Bradenton, Fla.) and Hoffman were selected to the Atlantic Sun Academic All-Conference Team.
Melville, a junior, and Bassett, a sophomore, went 10-8 in dual matches including seven wins while playing at the no. 1 seed. The duo earned A-Sun Pair of the Week honors on Mar. 13 after going 3-1 at the season-opening Ron Jon Beach 'N Boards Fest in Cocoa Beach, including a 2-0 victory over the no. 1 pairing from UNF.
Hoffman, Stetson's lone senior, and Coston, a sophomore, compiled an impressive 7-1 pairs record in conference play, while competing primarily at the no. 3 and no. 4 seeds. The pairing won eight straight matches from Mar. 22 through Mar. 30, including regional wins over pairs from Florida Atlantic, the College of Charleston, and UAB.
Speyerer earned all-freshman honors after going a perfect 2-0 in conference play with her partner, Taylor Kennedy. They also picked up exhibition wins against FAU and UNF.
DiGirolamo and Hoffman were each selected to the academic all-conference team for the second consecutive year. A junior Business Administration major, DiGirolamo maintains a 3.94 cumulative grade point average. This season she is 12-8 overall and 5-3 in A-Sun action while playing primarily at the no. 3 and no. 4 seeds.
Hoffman, a Management major, carries a 3.87 GPA in her final semester at Stetson. She and Coston teamed for a 13-7 overall record to go along with their 7-1 mark in A-Sun play.
The second-seeded Hatters (11-9) will compete for the Atlantic Sun Conference Championship this Saturday and Sunday at the Dolphin Beach Volleyball Complex in Jacksonville. Stetson will open the double-elimination tournament at 11 a.m. Saturday vs. Jacksonville.
