Long time Stetson University coach, administrator and teacher Bob Weickel will be honored on Tuesday, May 7, prior to the Stetson baseball game against Florida State at Melching Field.
Weickel is retiring from Stetson after 52 years of service to the University. During his tenure at Stetson, Weickel served as an assistant basketball coach under Glenn Wilkes, as head baseball coach and, since 1971, off and on over three tenures, as head men’s golf coach.
Weickel was given the nickname “Mr. Hatter” by former basketball coach Murray Arnold because of all the different roles he filled at the University over his career.
All of Weickel former players, along with friends and family members, are encouraged to attend.
Weickel will be recognized in a pre-game ceremony and there will be a reception in the VIP booth at Melching Field in his honor.
The game between the Hatters and Seminoles is scheduled for a 6:30 p.m. start and a near sell-out crowd is expected. Last year Stetson defeated then No. 1 Florida State in one of the two games played in DeLand. Once again this year the Seminoles are ranked among the top 10 teams in the nation.
Anyone interested in being a part of the reception for Coach Weickel should contact Stacy Turner at firstname.lastname@example.org or by calling 386-822-8100. The deadline to RSVP for the reception is 5 p.m. on Monday, May 6.
To reserve tickets for one of the two games against Florida State, the teams will also play on Wednesday, May 8, at 4 p.m., call the Stetson Athletics Ticket Office at 386-738-HATS.
